It’s Official: Early Signage Is Up and Mount Diablo BBQ Is Coming to Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, CA — It is no longer just paperwork, rumor, or a very barbecue-shaped hunch.

Early signage is now up at the former Horn Barbecue space in downtown Lafayette, confirming that Mount Diablo BBQ is on its way to 3422 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

The new restaurant’s own website now says “Opening Soon” and lists the Lafayette address directly, along with planned hours of Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. “or sold out.”

That means one of Lafayette’s most watched restaurant spaces is officially heading into its next chapter — and, once again, that chapter involves smoked meat.

A New Look for a Familiar BBQ Space

The building has already been through a major visual transformation. The former Horn Barbecue look, with its dark exterior and moody smokehouse feel, has been replaced by a much brighter red exterior and a cleaner farmhouse-style appearance.

Now the early Mount Diablo BBQ signage makes the change feel more real. We could pull permits and speak to landlords. But until there’s a sign and construction work is underway, you never know for sure what a new space will be.

What Mount Diablo BBQ Plans to Serve

With the signage and the website, we’ve got some concrete details on the future menu, too.

The menu currently posted online includes a breakfast section served daily from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., including breakfast tacos with pulled pork, brisket, or tri-tip, plus biscuit breakfast sandwiches with pulled pork or brisket.

After breakfast, the menu shifts into the heartier barbecue items: tri-tip sandwiches, brisket sandwiches, rib sandwiches, pulled pork, hot links, St. Louis-style pork ribs, chicken, burnt ends, combos, BBQ mac, BBQ spuds, salads, kids meals, sides, desserts, family packs, and larger catering-style packs.

The restaurant says its style draws from “California to the Carolinas,” with meats smoked over California oak wood.

The website also emphasizes a slow-cooking approach, telling customers that “all menu items will sell out,” and says the restaurant uses Harris Ranch beef, California oak, and no propane or starter fluid.

The Group Behind the Restaurant

The new Lafayette restaurant is tied to Real Smoked BBQ, a Northern California barbecue group with other restaurant operations already in the region.

That matters because this is not a first-time operator trying to figure out barbecue on Mt. Diablo Boulevard. The group is connected to existing Real Smoked BBQ concepts, including South Winchester BBQ in San Jose and The BBQ Pit in San Jose, both of which list Real Smoked BBQ branding and similar 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or sold-out hours.

Mission St BBQ in Santa Cruz is also listed through Toast as a Real Smoked BBQ restaurant at 1618 Mission St.

Why This Space Gets So Much Attention

The address itself has become one of Lafayette’s more closely watched restaurant spaces because it has hosted several barbecue restaurants over the years.

Before Horn, the site had been home to All the Smoke BBQ, Boneheads Texas BBQ, and longtime Lafayette favorite Bo’s Barbecue.

So When Will It Open?

For now, Mount Diablo BBQ is still listed as “Opening Soon,” and we have not seen a firm opening date posted publicly.

But with the exterior transformation largely visible from the street, early signage now up, and a full menu already online, this is no longer just a coming-soon mystery. Mount Diablo BBQ is officially on deck in Lafayette.

We will keep watching for an opening date, hours confirmation, and any soft-opening details. Join the free 925 News newsletter to get the next update on Mount Diablo BBQ and other East Bay restaurant openings.
