These Walnut Creek Donuts Are So Good, You Won’t Care That They’re Vegan

A popular coffee shop in Walnut Creek, California, is making a splash, not necessarily with its coffee, but with a different treat: vegan donuts.

When I stopped by Rooted Coffee to grab a donut for my kids, I had no idea these donuts were vegan. I got a delicious cake doughnut with a blueberry glaze on top.

My kids loved it, and I ate one too. It had a dense, yeasty flavor, reminiscent of some of the denser and less fluffy donuts I’ve enjoyed in Southern California.

Only later did I discover that these donuts are vegan. The lack of dairy products apparently made absolutely no difference in the flavor, which was delicious!

As a sworn carnivore, I hadn’t sought out a vegan treat, but when I ate it, it was terrific.

Rooted Coffee has a location on Locust Street in Walnut Creek, which is where I stopped by. They also have a Poets Corner location.

In addition to the blueberry donuts that I ate, they have cinnamon sugar donuts, chocolate donuts, maple donuts, crumb donuts, and an omega donut (no idea what that is). They also have a gluten-free option they make in-house which has things like chia seeds, hemp seeds, and flax seeds.

That’s a little bit too vegan for me! Maybe I’ll be open-minded and give it a try, but in the meantime, I’ll probably just come back for more of the blueberry.

Even if you’re not the kind of person who typically looks for vegan stuff, check out the donuts at Rooted. Of course, they have excellent coffee as well! A vegan donut and a classy espresso feel like a perfect morning combo.

We’re very much looking forward to Rooted’s new location in the former Larkey Market in Walnut Creek as well. Stay tuned here as we explore more of the food in the Walnut Creek area.
