55 Year Old Man Hit and Killed By Car at Concord Intersection, Police Say

CONCORD, CALIFORNIA – A 55-year-old man is dead after being hit by a vehicle along a busy stretch of Monument Boulevard in Concord on Sunday night, according to police.

Concord police say officers were called around 7:58 pm on Sunday, November 16, to a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Monument Boulevard near Reganti Drive, just west of Oak Grove Road. When officers arrived, they found the man unresponsive in the roadway. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police have not yet released the man’s name, pending notification of his family.

Driver stayed at the scene

According to Concord police and multiple regional news outlets, the driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this point, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the collision, though the full circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

The crash happened on a fast-moving section of Monument Boulevard that carries heavy traffic through one of Concord’s most densely populated corridors.

Call for witnesses

Concord police are asking anyone who saw what happened, or who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash, to contact the department’s Traffic Unit. Witnesses are asked to call Traffic Unit Officer Evan Doiron at 925-671-5096.

No arrests have been announced. As of Tuesday afternoon, police had not released additional details about whether the man was in a crosswalk, how fast the vehicle was believed to be traveling, or what direction the car or pedestrian were heading at the time of impact.

A corridor with ongoing safety concerns

The Monument Boulevard corridor has been the focus of pedestrian and bicycle safety discussions in Concord for years. The city has worked on long-planned improvements along Monument and nearby intersections to better protect people walking and biking in the area.

Sunday’s death also comes in a year when the same Monument/Reganti area has already seen other serious violence. In April, a 40-year-old man was fatally shot in what police described as a drive-by shooting near Monument Boulevard and Reganti Drive.
