Lafayette’s Iconic Bar Just Celebrated Its 90th Birthday

LAFAYETTE, CALIFORNIA – When this bar in Lafayette, California first started up in 1935, people in the East Bay were still riding horses into town and hitching them up out front.

Saloon doors, a squat little wooden building, and a name to boot–this is the kind of Wild West drinking spot you normally picture in movies. But in this case, it was actually there, in a time when the 925 was mostly ranch land with the accompanying real-life cowboys.

Well, it’s still there. Almost a century later, this staple of Lafayette nightlight (such as it is) is celebrating its 90th birthday.

The Roundup Saloon just celebrated 90 years in continuous operation. The hitching posts outdoors have been replaced with signs berating people for parking in the Roundup’s small lot to make their morning Starbucks run. And there’s a nice tent outdoors to expand the space.

Otherwise, surprisingly little has changed about Roundup. The building is essentially the same. It’s still cash only.

Sure, there’s probably a lot fewer cowboys, and a lot more aging tech execs. But as a legacy business, the Roundup still preserves its nonagenarian charm.
