7 Stores in the 925 That Are Open on Thanksgiving

If you wake up on Thanksgiving and realize you forgot cranberry sauce, need more butter, or promised the kids ice cream, you still have options in the 925.

While big chains like Costco, Target, Walmart and Trader Joe’s are closed today, a smaller group of supermarkets, pharmacies and convenience stores are staying open on shortened holiday schedules.

All hours below are for Thanksgiving Day 2025 (Thursday, November 27) and can change, so it is still smart to check online or call before you head out.

1. Safeway

Safeway is one of the most reliable options if you need a full grocery run on Thanksgiving in the 925. A Bay Area roundup from the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Safeway stores will be open today, with many locations closing at 6 pm.

Local store pages for Safeway in our area confirm shortened hours on Thursdays like Thanksgiving. For example, nearby locations such as Safeway S Broadway in Walnut Creek, Safeway Alamo Plaza and Safeway Mt Diablo Blvd in Lafayette list Thursday hours that close at 6 pm, even where the store is normally open 24 hours the rest of the week.

2. Lucky Supermarkets (Concord, Danville)

Lucky is another solid East Bay choice if you need standard groceries without warehouse-club crowds. According to Lucky’s 2025 holiday hours, all Lucky stores will be open on Thanksgiving until 6 pm across California, including Bay Area locations in Concord and Danville.

The Concord Lucky at 5190 Clayton Rd and the Danville Lucky at 660 San Ramon Valley Blvd both offer full-line grocery departments, bakery, meat and seafood counters, and party trays for those who decide at the last minute to host a few extra people.

3. FoodMaxx (Concord)

If you are trying to keep costs down but still need a lot of last-minute food, FoodMaxx is designed as a deep-discount, no-frills supermarket. Holiday hours from the company say all FoodMaxx stores will also be open on Thanksgiving until 6 pm.

In the 925, shoppers have options like FoodMaxx on Monument Blvd and on Clayton Rd in Concord, both of which normally open early and stay open late as discount grocery anchors for the area.

4. Whole Foods Market

If you are looking for organic or specialty options, both Walnut Creek Whole Foods locations are open today on shortened schedules. Whole Foods’ holiday hours page notes that stores are open on Thanksgiving with modified hours, and the local store pages for Walnut Creek list Thanksgiving hours as 7 am to 1 pm.

That makes the Newell Ave and Ygnacio Valley Rd stores good early-day options for prepared turkey dinners, vegan mains, high-end cheeses, and bakery pies if you want to upgrade part of your spread without cooking from scratch.

5. Sprouts Farmers Market

Sprouts in Walnut Creek, at 1530 Geary Rd, is another grocery option for the holiday. Regional roundups and Sprouts’ listed holiday hours say Sprouts Farmers Market will be open 7 am to 2 pm on Thanksgiving.

The store is known for its produce, bulk bins and natural/organic items, but the Walnut Creek location also carries beer and wine, a deli, fresh sushi and catering trays — handy if you need a few healthier side dishes to supplement a richer main meal.

6. CVS Pharmacy (Walnut Creek and other 925 locations)

If you mostly need pharmacy items or small household supplies, CVS is one of the few big chain drugstores operating today. Most CVS locations will be open on Thanksgiving from about 9 am to 2 pm.

Here in the 925, there are several CVS stores, including the downtown Walnut Creek CVS at 1871 N Main St, which typically offers over-the-counter medicine, toiletries, snacks, basic groceries, and some household items.

7. 7-Eleven (Lafayette and throughout the 925)

When everything else is closed or you just need something fast, 7-Eleven is often the true last-minute lifeline. The company describes its convenience stores as generally open 24 hours a day, and national Thanksgiving guides say some 7-Eleven locations operate on the holiday, but hours can vary by store.

In Lafayette, the 7-Eleven at 3347 Mt Diablo Blvd is shown on multiple mapping and store-locator sites as a 24-hour location, making it one of the more reliable quick stops in central Contra Costa on Thanksgiving.

A few big names that are not open today

It is just as important to know where you cannot go. Major Bay Area coverage notes that on Thanksgiving 2025, chains including Costco, Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, Best Buy, Home Depot, Macy’s and others are closed, with most planning to reopen early for Black Friday.

So if you were hoping to grab a frozen turkey at Costco, a last-minute toy at Target, or snacks from Trader Joe’s, you are out of luck until tomorrow.
