Car Flips Onto BART Tracks In Dramatic Accident on I-580

CASTRO VALLEY, CALIFORNIA – Mark this one as “you don’t see that every day.”

You could also file it under “strangest BART delay ever”.

Following a high speed crash on I-580 on December 16, the California Highway Patrol says that a car flipped off the highway and landed on BART’s tracks, causing major delays while a crane had to come and remove it.

CHP says the car was on a flatbed tow truck heading west on I-580 when it broke free during a three-vehicle crash. Thankfully, no one was in the car. But the tow truck driver was apparently injured.

No details yet, but it sounds like the tow truck was attempting to tow the car, and another vehicle hit the pair, sending its “cargo” onto the tracks below.

BART service between Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton was halted while crews worked to remove the vehicle and assess damage. A crane lifted the car off the trackway a couple of hours later, but trains continued to single-track through the area with major delays as repairs continued.

There was a brush fire from the crash, which the Antioch Fire Department rapidly knocked down. No word yet on the tow truck driver’s condition–they were reportedly taken to the hospital, so we hope they’re okay.
