We Have a Confirmed Opening Date for Walnut Creek’s “Square” New Detroit Pizza Restaurant

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – Some “guys” are about to launch a new pizza place in Walnut Creek, California.

And heads up, they’re pretty square!

A brand new Detroit-style pizza joint is coming soon (opening date below) to 1991 N California Blvd. I’ve had their pizza before at Local Kitchens in Lafayette, and it’s delicious.

The new spot is Square Pie Guys. And after a long build-out, they’re finally ready to open.

If you’ve never had Square Pie Guys, the signature is Detroit-style pizza: a rectangular pie with a thick-but-light interior crumb, plus that crisp, cheese-laced edge that makes the corner pieces the prize. The menu also includes wings and other sides, and the restaurant runs rotating specials and collaborations.

I like how the pizza feels almost like a casserole, or a cheesy, gooey focaccia. The crispy bits of cheese around the edges of the crust are the standout bit here. I did a full review of them here.

My kids love it too. And the square shape makes it perfect to pack as leftovers in school lunches, instantly earning me Coolest Dad Ever status.

For Walnut Creek specifically, a third-party ordering page already lists standard hours (generally starting at 11:30 a.m.), which is a good hint at what the operating schedule may look like once the store is live — though hours can always shift around an opening.

Square Pie Guys is using the start of 2026 to roll out a big, very Bay Area moment: its first-ever music artist pizza collaboration, created with Bay Area rapper P-Lo.

On Square Pie Guys’ seasonal menu, the restaurant describes the P-Lo Pie as a Filipino-inspired Detroit-style pizza built on vodka sauce, then loaded with house-made hot honey “bomba,” red onion, sausage, longanisa, spicy ranch, and basil (with a vegetarian option also available).

Square Pie Guys has also tied the collaboration to community support — the P-Lo Pie listing notes that 3% of profit goes to United Playaz, a long-running San Francisco nonprofit focused on youth mentorship, empowerment, and violence prevention.

So, when does Square Pie Guys arrive? A spokesperson for the restaurant gave us a hot-off-the-presses opening date: January 11.
