PLEASANT HILL, CALIFORNIA — One of Pleasant Hill’s best-known neighborhood markets quietly went through a major transition last year, and many locals are only now realizing just how significant the change was.
Pleasant Hill Market (2397 Pleasant Hill Rd, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523), the longtime grocery spot at the corner of Pleasant Hill Road and Gregory/Grayson, closed for a stretch in 2025, sparking concern that the store might be gone for good.
But instead of disappearing, the market changed ownership, underwent renovations, and then reopened under new management.
I stopped by to check it out, and to take the photos you see here.
The market looks mostly the same from the outside.

Inside, they’re leaning into local meats and organic items.

Local brands are called out specifically–often with little hand-written labels from staff–and with big displays for specifics types of products.
Local Concord salsa brand Raging Dog, for example, has its own area.

The interior still has a “metal shelves with selected products” kind of vibe, versus a large, general purpose grocer.

The Market also seems to be emphasizing local eggs, and things like local wine and beers.

Speaking of wine, there’s a nice, smallish section–again with lots of those little personal, handwritten notes.

Pleasant Hill has no shortage of grocery options, but Pleasant Hill Market has always occupied a different kind of place in the local landscape.
It is the kind of corner market people mention with a little nostalgia. Over the years, it earned a reputation for a more personal feel than a big chain. That history is part of what made the ownership change notable — and part of why locals were relieved to see the market come back rather than vanish.
