An East Bay family is outraged after receiving a $1,200 bill from Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PGE), despite efforts to conserve energy.
They took to social media to share the “criminal” amount they were charged.
The family of three, living in the Crossings neighborhood in Walnut Creek, California, reported that two members work full-time, and only one person is home during the day. They say they have kept their air conditioner set to 79°F and have been mindful of their energy usage.
The homeowner discovered their air conditioner is undersized for the house, compounding the issue during hot weather.
The family expressed frustration over the high cost, particularly as they say they received a notice from PGE on the same day praising them for using 29% less electricity than usual. The situation has sparked concerns about affordability, especially for families on tight budgets with children and other expenses.
The family described the billing situation as “being robbed” and criticized PGE for sending the congratulatory notice alongside the hefty bill.

I received a very high bill for the bill period of 6/15 – 7/17 of $1,000. My bill was double the amount from the previous billing cycle. I reached out to pge on a couple of different occasions and one occasion I asking if they could have someone come out to check my meter because I thought something was wrong with my meter. I was not aware at the time that other people in the bay area are having the same issue. The women on the phone that I spoke to at pge stated to me that they do not set up appointments to have meters checked. I then reached out to the utilities commission and I know have an appointment set to have my meter checked but my hopes of this being the issue is far gone as I continue to read about more and more people having this issue. Something needs to be done about pge. They should not be allowed to charge these prices. They have the monopoly and basically are allowed to do whatever they want and this is not right.
I had a a friend that just payed $700 for his electric bill on their family home in Solano County. Their gas bill for their pool was only $50.00.
2 bedroom condo. Temp set at 79°. 899sq ft. Next bill projected to be $525.00.
I truly truly believe there are messing g with these meters through their system! I live alone AND am on the CARE program.
I work PART time and follow all recommendations pg&e give us. It hasn’t worked and my bill has been over $400 the last two months. I have even gone to the laundromat wondering if that would make a significant difference. It didn’t!!
Our bills have been between $800 and $1000 since January. We are moving to southern UT on Saturday. I am done with this place! Utilities in UT average $185 per month for a 2000 sf house using heat and air conditioning year round!
My bill is over $900 dollars this month, and I’m in a 998 sqft house!!!! Highway robbery.
My bill was over 500 dollars. Was the highest bill we ever had. Hopefully it will be lower this month. Just have to suffer when it gets hot.
Fix your AC unit. It is not PG&E’s fault that your AC runs ALL THE TIME, because as you have stated that you don’t have a properly sized AC Unit to cool your home! Therefore your Electric Bill is crazy high.
$958 and we were out of town for about 15 days of the bill cycle with the A/C set to 82 degrees while we were gone. This is absolute robbery.
Stop voting for the green energy scam politicians and regulators. There is zero markup on the gas and electric PG&E delivers. Price is set by the government and the market.. PG&E is just their convienient scapegoat for their mismanagement! We need energy independence. Drill baby drill!
I had a bill for $2000 one month I paid it. The next month I got another bill for $2000. There is no way we were using that amount of electricity and those two months were the only times I’ve ever had bills that high Arguing with PG&E is absolutely a waste of time. And I live in the Santa Cruz mountains and have had estimated charges during times when there were power outages.
I have 19 solar panels on my roof and still have to pay more than $1,800.00 on my true bill up plus I am still paying the loan for that solar panels of $181.00 per month plus the PG&E other miscellaneous fees they charged every month.
For a family of four and a small house I think I am paying more than without a solar.
I think it’s time for us to leave California for good.

Yes our bill is way up there we have cut down so much I only wash clothes on weekends now. Our bill is ridiculously high with just two adults
$725- do not run air because of the cost – maybe 2 loads of laundry a week, maybe I run the dishwasher 2 times a week. Our bedroom at one point was 97 and we laid under a fan. What the heck??? I cannot do this!!!
