Concord Police Involved in Region-Spanning Hunt for Antioch Shooter

CONCORD, CALIFORNIA – When a major crime happens in the East Bay, it’s often an “all hands on deck” kind of situation.

That was the case with a manhunt this week that ended up spanning much of the Bay Area.

Concord police helped track down a suspect in an Antioch shooting case that quickly stretched well beyond Contra Costa County lines, after investigators say a woman was shot late Friday night on Buchanan Road and the suspect was later found and detained in San Rafael.

According to a media release from the Antioch Police Department, officers responded at about 8:39 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, to a ShotSpotter alert reporting multiple rounds fired in the 2300 block of Buchanan Road.

ShotSpotter, by the way, is an automated system of microphones and other tech that “listens” for gunshots.

Police say they found evidence of a shooting at the scene and later learned a 42-year-old woman arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound; she was treated and is expected to survive.

How the suspect was located — and why multiple agencies got involved

Investigators say follow-up work (including witness interviews, canvassing, and reviewing evidence) led them to identify a suspect: 43-year-old Jonta Davenport of Oakley. The release says officers with the San Rafael Police Department located and detained Davenport, after which Antioch officers responded, took custody, and transported him for booking.

Davenport was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of attempted murder under Penal Code 664/187(a), police said.

The Antioch Police Department also issued a public thank-you to the Concord Police Department for assisting with the incident (alongside San Rafael). They didn’t explain in detail the exact involvement, but again, local agencies often help each other out when there’s an alleged shooter on the loose.

What we know — and what police are not saying yet

Police emphasized that the investigation is still active and said they are not releasing additional details yet to protect the integrity of the case.
