Philz in Lafayette is Taking on Starbucks, One Fall Drink at a Time

Philz Coffee in Lafayette, California, is going head-to-head with Starbucks over fall drinks. It’s part of a national launch of new drinks for the Fall from Philz.

Philz makes it clear that this is a dig at Starbucks. A poster in the Lafayette Philz location starts with “Move over, pumpkin,” referencing Starbucks’ popular pumpkin spice latte (which has a strange colonial history, by the way.)

The two new drinks Philz rolled out are Spiced Vanilla, which combines Ghirardelli vanilla syrup with holiday spices and oat milk, and Vanilla Date Delight.

My favorite of the new drinks is the latter, which is sweetened with date syrup and also uses oat milk.

The flavors are subtle, and I appreciate the connection to Philz’s hometown of San Francisco, which is also the hometown of Ghirardelli chocolate.

The Vanilla Date Delight

The drinks are made with cold brew coffee, which further sets them apart from Starbucks’ somewhat harsher, flavored espresso drinks.

You can stop by the Philz in downtown Lafayette, California like I did, or visit any of the Philz Coffee locations around the Bay Area to try these new drinks.

Keep in mind these are fall flavors, so they won’t be around for long!
