Locals Gripe About “Terrible Design” of New Sidewalks on Contra Costa Blvd

Pleasant Hill, CA — Local residents are voicing frustration over recently constructed 10-foot-wide sidewalks on Contra Costa Boulevard, calling the design excessive and disruptive to traffic flow. The project, which aims to improve safety and comply with accessibility standards, has sparked widespread debate.

Giovanni G of Virginia Hills criticized the decision in a neighborhood post, claiming the oversized sidewalks have worsened the turn onto Contra Costa Boulevard without serving significant pedestrian traffic. His comments sparked a wave of reactions, with many others echoing his concerns.

Jim H of Sunrise Ridge sarcastically commented, “Our tax money at work,” while others, such as Dana C from Gregory Gardens, pointed out the city’s obligation to meet accessibility requirements, including the installation of tactile yellow bumps for visually impaired pedestrians.

Kevin B from San Miguel countered the criticism, noting the intersection’s history as a high-crash area and defending the redesign as an effort to reduce accidents. However, many remained unconvinced, with residents like Russell T calling the design “terrible” and others urging neighbors to contact the city council.

Anne C. from Gregory Gardens questioned if the city provides opportunities for public input on such projects, while Clifton C from Grayson Creek encouraged residents to voice their concerns to city leaders.

The redesign is reportedly part of broader state-mandated improvements to enhance safety and accessibility. Despite its intentions, the project has left many residents, such as Laura H of Woodside Hills, labeling it a “mess.”

The Pleasant Hill City Council has yet to comment on the criticism, but residents continue to debate whether the changes benefit the community or unnecessarily complicate local traffic.
