WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – A brand new Chick-fil-A restaurant at 2290 Oak Grove Road, in the Citrus Marketplace shopping center near Citrus Avenue is officially on the way. The freestanding building will replace a long-vacant bank pad at the northeast corner of the center.
How the project was approved
- March 14 2024: the city’s Planning Commission granted a conditional-use permit and design approval.
- May 22 2024: after a lengthy public hearing, the City Council denied an appeal and upheld the permit, allowing the project to proceed.
No drive-thru—by design
Responding to traffic concerns raised by neighbors and city staff, the developer removed the drive-thru lane found at many Chick-fil-A sites. The Walnut Creek location will offer dine-in, curbside pickup and mobile to-go orders only.
With those stipulations in place, construction has reportedly begun!
No official opening date is available yet.
Why it matters
The restaurant will be Chick-fil-A’s second Walnut Creek address—the first opened on North Main Street in 2012—and the chain’s first in the city without a drive-thru. Supporters told councilmembers the project will reactivate a largely idle corner of Citrus Marketplace and bring new dining options to the Shadelands-Ygnacio corridor.
