Two Starbucks Cafes in Danville Are Closing Forever, Including the Iconic One

DANVILLE, CALIFORNIA – Two Starbucks stores in Danville are closing as part of the company’s nationwide retrenchment this weekend, with shutdowns beginning as soon as Sunday, September 28 (technically once the day ends on Saturday).

The locations are:

  • 398 Hartz Ave (Downtown Danville)
  • 11000 Crow Canyon Rd, Suite E (Blackhawk area)

The Hartz Avenue is sadly the iconic Danville Starbucks (once a Starbucks Reserve) in the city’s downtown core.

Why this is happening

Starbucks is closing hundreds of cafés and eliminating roughly 900 non-retail jobs as part of a $1 billion restructuring and portfolio review. The company says it will finish the fiscal year with about 18,300 stores in North America — roughly 1% fewer than before — after identifying locations without a path to profitability or where it couldn’t create the experience it wants.

What about nearby stores?

Other Starbucks in and near Danville remain open as of today, including 1 Railroad Ave (Danville Square) and 4000 Blackhawk Plaza Circle. Hours and status can change quickly — check the Starbucks store locator before you go.

Regional context

The East Bay is seeing additional closures, including at least one in San Ramon (6000 Bollinger Canyon Rd) as part of the same wave.

What happens to employees

Starbucks says affected baristas will be offered transfers where possible or severance, and that the company is investing in staffing hours and store upgrades even as it trims locations.

Coffee alternatives downtown

If the Hartz Ave store was your go-to, nearby options include Peet’s Coffee at 435 Railroad Ave and Sideboard on Railroad Ave.

Maison Benoit has great coffee, too.
