Philz Is Launching Its First Northern California Drive-Thru Cafe, and It’s Right Here in the 925

PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA – Philz Coffee has flipped the lights on at a brand-new cafe in Pleasanton, and this one comes with something the chain almost never does — a full drive-thru.

The shop soft-opened Monday at 1803 Santa Rita Road in the Valley Plaza center, taking over the former KFC site. Philz leaders say Pleasanton is the company’s first drive-thru in Northern California and only its second drive-thru anywhere, making this a notable first for the 925.

Where it is and when it’s open

The new Philz sits at the corner of Valley and Santa Rita, in a building long set up for drive-thru service. During its soft launch, the store listed limited hours on Philz’s official locations page; regular hours were slated to start mid-week. Check the live listing before you go.

Why this is a big deal for Philz fans

Philz built its following on made-to-order pour-overs — not exactly the fast-food model — which is why drive-thrus are rare for the brand. At Monday’s opening, Philz’s COO reportedly called Pleasanton the chain’s first drive-thru in Northern California and its second drive-thru overall. Translation: the Tri-Valley just became Philz’s testing ground for making that signature one-cup-at-a-time experience work behind a drive-thru window.

What to expect on the menu

Inside and at the window, you’ll find the usual Philz signatures: customizable blends (from “Dark and Bold” to “Light and Bright”), seasonal specials, and popular cold brews like the Iced Mint Mojito. Unlike some competitors, you won’t see espresso drinks like lattes or cappuccinos on the menu — that’s by design.

How Pleasanton landed it

City records show Pleasanton’s Planning Commission approved Philz’s plan last December to repurpose the former KFC with only minor exterior tweaks and continue using the established drive-thru lane. Staff noted the site has handled drive-thru traffic for roughly three decades without reported issues.

The Tri-Valley context

This is Philz’s second Tri-Valley location after the cafe at San Ramon’s City Center Bishop Ranch. With Pleasanton open — and adding a drive-thru option — East Bay fans have another convenient stop for their “one cup at a time” fix.

How to try it

Plug in 1803 Santa Rita Road, Pleasanton. Before you roll out, peek at Philz’s official locations page for any hour updates during the soft-opening ramp. Then choose your blend, tell them exactly how you like it, and decide whether you’re parking or taking the drive-thru for a true 925 first.
