LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA – A late-night investigation into why dogs were barking reportedly spiraled into a frightening machete confrontation on a rural property in unincorporated Livermore.
Authorities say a 25-year-old man, Hugo Peraza-Leveron, is now facing two counts of attempted murder after allegedly swinging machetes at two men during the encounter early Saturday morning, December 27, 2025.
What happened
According to a probable cause declaration from an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputy, the incident unfolded just before 2:30 a.m. on a rural property on Cross Road. Investigators said the victims and a witness reported finding a stranger on the property who was armed with machetes after they went outside to check on the barking dogs.
The deputy wrote that the suspect allegedly approached while dragging two machetes and began swinging them at the men. One victim reportedly tried to intervene as the other backed away, and the suspect allegedly made threats during the confrontation.
At one point, the first victim picked up a pipe in self-defense, and the suspect then walked away and fled, according to the declaration.
Authorities said they contacted Peraza-Leveron nearly two hours later on Greenville Road, about four miles away, and he allegedly still had a machete with him. The victims and witness then identified him as the attacker, and he was arrested shortly after 5 a.m., according to the same court filing.
He was booked into Santa Rita Jail and later charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office with four felonies: attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon involving both alleged victims, along with additional allegations tied to weapon use and threats, local media reported.
