Cashier Shot Over a Matter of Cigarettes in Walnut Creek

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – It’s not worth dying over some cigarettes. But that’s what nearly happened in Walnut Creek this weekend, police say.

A late-night attempted cigarette theft at a Walnut Creek gas station turned violent early Sunday morning, leaving a store employee with a gunshot wound and police investigating a second suspect.

What police say happened

Walnut Creek police say officers were dispatched at about 3:54 a.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026 to an armed robbery report at the Kwik Serve Gas Station (1387 S. California Blvd.).

When officers arrived, they found an employee suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a local hospital and was still receiving treatment as of Monday.

Investigators say two masked suspects entered the store and attempted to steal cigarettes. Police say the employee confronted the suspects, a struggle followed, and the employee was shot during the altercation.

One arrest made, investigation ongoing

Police say detectives developed leads and, later that same day at about 6:00 p.m., arrested a 16-year-old juvenile with assistance from the Oakland Police Department. The suspect was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of:

  • Attempted robbery (664/211 PC)
  • Attempted homicide (664/187 PC)

Patch reported police are still searching for a second suspect.
