Teenage Crime Spree Ends With Shooting, Chase to Orinda, Police Say

ORINDA, CALIFORNIA – There are a lot of moving parts, places, and people in this one, so please bear with us.

A violent overnight incident that began in Oakley ended on Highway 24 in Orinda after a pursuit early Monday, with two juvenile suspects now in custody on attempted homicide and kidnapping-related allegations, according to police.

Authorities say the episode unfolded around 1:08 a.m. January 19, when Oakley officers responded to a report of a possible kidnapping and shooting near East Cypress Road and Frank Hengel Way.

Officers located several juveniles nearby, including a male victim with what police described as a grazing gunshot wound to the head.

What police say happened

Investigators say three Oakley residents (two young adults and a juvenile female) picked up two juvenile males and the group was together at Cypress Grove Park.

Specifically, the Oakley police said in a statement that they were “hanging out” in one of the juvenile’s cars.

Police allege the two boys became angry when no one would take them to buy cannabis, and the situation escalated quickly: the two suspects allegedly forced the two females to drive away at gunpoint, then forced them out of the vehicle and took off.

Police say a male who had exited the car earlier tried to intervene and was shot at through the windshield multiple times, suffering the grazing head wound; he was treated at a hospital and released.

How it ended in Orinda

Contra Costa County Sheriff’s deputies assisted Oakley police and spotted the vehicle speeding westbound on Highway 4, prompting a pursuit that continued to westbound Highway 24 into Orinda, authorities said. The pursuit ended when the vehicle became disabled on Highway 24 in Orinda, and both juvenile suspects were taken into custody.

“We thank the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and the Orinda Police Department for their vital assistance in this investigation,” the Oakley police said in a statement.

Police said both suspects also had warrants, and they were booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, and carjacking.

Oakley police asked anyone with information to call 925-625-8060 and reference case 26-95.
