ORINDA, CALIFORNIA – Amid a reported $18 billion buyout offer, Bay Area coffee stalwart Peet’s is reportedly closing 27 local stores.
For the folks who eschew Starbucks for this more “local” option, that’s a scary statistic. Multiple shops in downtown San Francisco have already confirmed that they are closing in late January.
Are Lamorinda and WC’s locations safe?

For reference, we have two Peet’s Coffees directly in Lamorinda–one in Orinda and one in Lafayette. There are also several in Walnut Creek that Lamorinda residents frequent.
If you’ve ever hung out to listen to people play music outside the Peet’s in downtown WC, you know the appeal that this local coffee spot can have–despite being a chain.

The shuttering of Bay Area locations is reportedly coming as Keurig Dr Pepper is in the process of an all-cash takeover of JDE Peet’s (Peet’s parent company).
The catch is that Peet’s hasn’t released an official list of the stores that are closing.
So, the Bay Area Telegraph got on the phone! We spoke to every store in Walnut Creek, as well as both the Lafayette and Orinda locations.

Staff there assured us that none of the local stores in Lamorinda or Walnut Creek are slated to close down.
Of course, things can always change, and staff on the ground aren’t always told about closures until right before they happen.
Still, it appears that our local branches of Peet’s are safe for now!
We’ll be following the closures closely, and will let you know if anything changes. Make sure to join our free 925 news newsletter so I can email you as this develops.
