Big Crash on Highway 24 Causes Massive Delays During Wednesday Morning Commute

LAFAYETTE, CALIFORNIA – If you left this morning for work or school and found yourself facing delays of 30+ minutes while traveling through Lafayette, here’s what was going on.

The California Highway Patrol reports that a Kia Optima and Rav 4 collided with each other while traveling Westbound on Highway 24 around 7:30am.

The crash happened near the Acalanes Road offramp. The crash reportedly blocked at least 3 lanes, at about the worst possible time and place for folks heading into the city.

Data from CHP shows that tow trucks were called, but they got stuck in the traffic from the crash, which meant it took them a while to arrive on the scene. There were no injuries to the Kia driver, but the Rav 4 driver was initially still in their vehicle, and it’s unclear if they were injured or stuck.

Predictably, the traffic started spilling onto the nearby surface arounds around Lafayette.

If you were driving to school–even as far away as Taylor Blvd–you almost certainly hit massive delays. I was personally stuck in them.

By around 9am, the crash was clear, but the surface road traffic lingered around Lafayette. No word on injuries or outcomes from the crash, beyond the initial report that the Kia driver was fine.

No word yet as to the cause, either. As you’ll note in my photos, though, there was thick fog this morning, and visibility was reduced. It’s possible that contributed. But we won’t know until the CHP investigates.
