California’s Best Deep Dish Pizza Restaurant Just Opened a New East Bay Branch

LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA – As an East Coast transplant, I can attest to the fact that it’s hard to find really good New York style pizza in the Bay Area.

There’s a different kind of pizza, though, that’s excellent here–Chicago style deep dish. And that’s largely because of one local chain that does an extremely good job making it.

Now, that local chain had just opened a brand new branch in another East Bay city.

The pizza place is Zachary’s. Their signature pies are now available at a brand new restaurant in Livermore.

Zachary’s Chicago Pizza has officially opened its new Livermore location. The company announced the opening on Feb. 2, and says it is starting out with dinner-only service during its opening window.

Zachary’s has been collecting “best pizza” wins for decades, and its stuffed pies have earned praise from multiple outlets over the years. On the company’s Awards & Press page, Zachary’s notes it has been a 19-time Diablo Magazine “Best Pizza” winner (including 2022-2023).

Here at the Bay Area Telegraph, we don’t give out pizza awards. But if we did, we’d choose Zachary’s for the best deep dish (Slice House wins for best NY-style, by the way–more below).

If it is your first time at Zachary’s, there are two obvious entry points. Spinach and Mushroom is Zachary’s signature pie, which they call their “pride and joy” on their website.

It’s a very California pie, in that it combines the classic Chicago pizza with fresh produce–something California honestly does far better than the Windy City.

Or, go for the Zachary’s Special, a classic combo (Italian sausage, green pepper, onion, mushroom, mozzarella) offered as stuffed or thin.

Not in the mood to commit to a full-on stuffed pizza situation? Zachary’s also leans on a more traditional thin-style pizza lineup, plus salads, meatballs, and a happy hour window on weekdays.

Zachary’s used to have a San Ramon location, which is now closed. So folks in the Tri-Valley will be happy to have the chain back.

The new Zachary’s is in downtown Livermore at 2470 First Street, Suite 104, and the restaurant lists its phone number as 925-292-0159. For now, Zachary’s is operating on “soft opening hours” (dinner service): Sunday-Thursday 4:00 pm to 9:30 pm and Friday-Saturday 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Livermore is fast becoming a pizza town. Slice House is planning to open there soon, which means this little hamlet south of the core East Bay will have branches of the Bay Area’s two best pizza spots!
