Walnut Creek’s Very Fancy Outdoor Furniture Store Has Sadly Closed

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA — One of Walnut Creek’s fanciest places to shop for patio furniture has closed after just over three years in business.

Yardbird, the premium outdoor furniture showroom at 1406 N. Broadway, is no longer open.

The store opened in 2023 in the former Sprint storefront, bringing sectional sofas, dining sets, lounge chairs, fire tables, umbrellas and outdoor accessories to downtown Walnut Creek. The showroom was designed to feel more like a high-end home-design gallery than a traditional patio-furniture warehouse.

Yardbird’s arrival was notable at the time. The company called the location its “San Francisco” showroom, even though it was in Walnut Creek, and described it as the brand’s first showroom in the Bay Area and California. It was also one of 10 new standalone showrooms Yardbird planned to open nationally that spring.

Customers could sit on the furniture, compare finishes and fabrics, and work with in-house designers. The brand’s collections included Grade-A teak, aluminum, wicker and Sunbrella fabrics. Some products also incorporated recycled plastic collected from areas where it could otherwise have entered the ocean.

The company was acquired by Best Buy in 2021, and the Walnut Creek showroom was part of Best Buy’s effort to expand Yardbird’s physical retail presence. The location lasted only a little more than three years after opening.

The reason for the closure has not been publicly announced. Yardbird’s website remains active, and the company continues to sell outdoor furniture online. However, its current showroom directory no longer lists a Bay Area location.

The building itself also appears to be looking for its next tenant. Commercial real estate firm Gallelli lists the approximately 5,196-square-foot freestanding property at 1406 N. Broadway for lease or sublease.

For local shoppers, Walnut Creek still has other options for high-end outdoor furniture. Patioworld remains open at 1628 Mt. Diablo Blvd. and says it has served Northern California for more than 40 years.

Terra Outdoor Living also operates a Walnut Creek showroom at 1902 Mt. Diablo Blvd., with furniture, fire tables, umbrellas and outdoor accessories.

Yardbird may still be available online, but the in-person shopping experience is gone from Walnut Creek. For a city that has recently welcomed several new furniture and home-design concepts, the empty showroom leaves one more downtown retail space waiting to see what comes next.
