Iconic San Ramon Cafe Has Moved After Decades in the Same Spot

SAN RAMON, CALIFORNIA — If you’ve spent years (or maybe decades, or generations) going to one local San Ramon cafe, it’s time to pivot your drive to a new spot.

Well, not a new deli. But at least a new location!

Erik’s DeliCafe, the long-serving San Ramon restaurant, has moved to 159 Market Place in The Marketplace Shopping Center, near Bishop Ranch. The cafe’s website confirms the new address and welcomes customers to its new home.

For regulars, the move means a familiar lunch option is still available in San Ramon — just with a different route to get there.

A New Address for a Familiar Favorite

Erik’s previously operated at 2551 San Ramon Valley Boulevard, Suite 115. The San Ramon Chamber of Commerce’s 2024 community guide listed the restaurant at that address and profiled co-owner Jorge Gutierrez, highlighting the business’s connections with other local chamber members.

The relocation included a temporary closure before the restaurant reopened near Bishop Ranch, according to Nosh’s September 8 restaurant openings roundup.

That means customers can already visit the new location.

Sandwiches With Familiar Names

Erik’s has built its identity around sandwiches with names that are considerably more memorable than “turkey and cheese.”

The chain’s menu includes Pilgrim’s Progress, with turkey and avocado on nine-grain bread; the R.E.O. Speedwagon, featuring ham, turkey and Monterey Jack on sourdough; and Abbott’s Habit, a warm roast beef sandwich with Swiss cheese and mushrooms.

Many feature the chain’s signature Secret Goo spread.

There are vegetarian choices, too, including the Del Monte Special with avocado and Monterey Jack, and the Isle of Capri with mozzarella and basil pesto. Soups, salads and carrot cake round out the menu.

The company’s Northern California roots stretch back to 1973, when Erik Johnson opened the first Erik’s DeliCafe in a 600-square-foot space in Scotts Valley. Today, the company lists 29 locations.
