We’ve Got an Official Opening Date for Walnut Creek’s Iconic Ice Rink

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – Halloween hasn’t even arrived yet, but it’s already time to put one of Walnut Creek’s favorite holiday traditions on the calendar.

Walnut Creek on Ice will open Friday, November 20, 2026, returning to Civic Park for its 21st season. The rink will remain open through January 18, 2027, according to Walnut Creek Downtown’s official announcement.

And yes, the very popular ice slide is coming back, too.

Organizers say the 90-foot Frosty’s Summit Ice Slide will return alongside the covered skating rink at 1365 Civic Drive. Private fire pits will also be available for those who prefer a little warmth with their winter outing.

The season will include an Ice-Skating Academy, hockey classes and Wednesday morning Littles Skates for younger children. Organizers also promise a special morning visit from Santa.

“After 21 years, we’ve seen kids grow up on this ice and come back with families of their own,” Kathy Hemmenway said in the announcement.

Opening day also comes with another reason to visit Civic Park.

The city’s Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for November 20 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The free event will feature complimentary hot cocoa, live carolers and a meet-and-greet with Frosty the Snowman.

The tree lighting takes place at 1375 Civic Drive, right by the rink, making it easy to combine the two into an evening downtown. The City of Walnut Creek and Walnut Creek Downtown Association are presenting the celebration.

For skating tickets, class information and reservations, check the official Walnut Creek on Ice website. Some sections still display previous-season information, so confirm the 2026-27 session details before booking.

For now, the date to mark is November 20. Holiday skating in downtown Walnut Creek is less than a month away.
