Photographer Thomas Hawk has been documenting the San Francisco Bay Area and American life in general for decades. Known as one of the earliest adopters of the photo-sharing site Flickr, Hawk has posted thousands of photos over the years.
Today, Hawk announced to his 52,000+ followers on Twitter that he had decided on his favorite pizza in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Which pie got this famous photographer’s vote?
Bay Area Pizza Problems
The Bay Area has never been known for its pizza. The East Coast, and New York in particular, is often known as the pizza capital of the United States.
Bay Area pizza often trends towards the healthy and complex. The Cheese Board Pizza in Berkeley, for example, is an anarchist collective that also happens to make pizza.

Slice House in Walnut Creek, California has our favorite New York style slice in the Bay Area. It’s very close to the pizza you’d get in NYC.

Hawk’s Pick
Hawk didn’t pick either of these places, though. In fact, he decided on a totally different style of pizza: Chicago style. Chicago food is very different from the Bay Area’s food in many ways.
Pizza is one of them. Chicago pizza is deep dish, and extremely thick and gooey.
Which pie did Hawk choose? The pepperoni pizza at Zachary’s Pizza.
His tweet includes a mouth-watering photo of one of Zachary’s pies.

The tweet has stirred up a lot of controversy! Hundreds of people have interacted with it, and many shared their own picks for the Bay Area’s best pizza.
Napoli Pizza in Vallejo, Riccos in Walnut Creek, and several others got votes from the community.
Hawk’s advice to his doubters? Try Zachary’s pizza cold the next morning!
We happen to agree with Hawk, at least when it comes to Chicago-style pizza. Zachary’s indeed makes the best deep-dish pie in the Bay Area. And it is even better the next day.
