30 Fun Things to Do With Kids (or Grandkids) in the East Bay on a Winter Day

Have kids at home over Winter Break, or trying to find a fun weekend activity on a chilly/rainy day in the East Bay?
We’ve got a list of 30+ fun activities to do with kids in Berkeley, Oakland and especially the 925. We’re lucky to live in a place where there’s tons to do both outdoors and indoors, even in the Winter. Embrace the season and enjoy!
1. Tilden Park’s Little Farm (Berkeley)

Tilden Regional Park’s Little Farm is a classic favorite for families. Sadly you can’t feed the animals any more, but they’d still love a visit. After meeting cows, goats, and bunnies, consider riding the antique carousel or exploring the park’s scenic trails.
2. Steam Trains in Tilden Park (Berkeley)

Just down the road from Little Farm, you’ll find the Redwood Valley Railway. Bundle up for a short but magical ride on miniature steam trains winding through redwoods, tunnels, and trestles. It’s a fun outdoor excursion even on a crisp winter day.
3. Chabot Space & Science Center (Oakland Hills)

Chabot Space & Science Center offers interactive exhibits on astronomy and space exploration. Kids can learn about the cosmos, check out the planetarium shows, and (on clear weekend nights) look through powerful telescopes. It’s both educational and awe-inspiring.
4. Children’s Fairyland (Oakland)

Designed especially for young kids, Children’s Fairyland is a whimsical storybook park filled with gentle rides, puppets, and fairytale sets. During the holiday season, they often host “Fairy Winterland” with lights and festive activities.
5. Oakland Zoo (Oakland)

Even in cooler weather, the Oakland Zoo is a fantastic place to spend the day. Visit elephants, giraffes, big cats, and more. Check the calendar for special events; the gondola ride up to the California Trail offers stunning views of the Bay and beyond.

6. Warm Up at Fentons Creamery (Oakland)

7. Lawrence Hall of Science (Berkeley)

Perched above UC Berkeley, the Lawrence Hall of Science provides hands-on STEM exhibits and experiments. Kids can explore robotics, build structures, and take in the panoramic view of the Bay from the outdoor plaza (bundle up, it can be windy!).
8. Habitot Children’s Museum Pop-Ups (Berkeley)

Habitot has been a beloved spot for toddlers and preschoolers for years. Though they’ve been in transition, they host pop-up events around Berkeley with engaging, age-appropriate exhibits and sensory play. Check their website for the latest location and schedule.
9. Redwood Regional Park (Oakland)

For those looking to get outdoors, Redwood Regional Park features family-friendly trails beneath towering redwood trees. Winter rains make the forest lush and green. Bring layers and sturdy shoes for muddy spots.
10. Walnut Creek on Ice (Walnut Creek)
Each winter, Walnut Creek transforms part of Civic Park into an open-air ice rink. Glide around under festive lights, with music setting the mood. Skate aids are available for little ones, and the surrounding downtown area is perfect for post-skate hot cocoa.
The Kristi Yamaguchi rink at City Center in San Ramon is a great option, too.
11. Lindsay Wildlife Experience (Walnut Creek)

This wildlife hospital and education center gives children a chance to see and learn about native California animals. Watch feedings, meet raptors up close, and discover how injured wildlife is cared for. It’s equal parts fun and educational.

Heather Farm Park offers playgrounds, sports fields, and a serene duck pond. On a dry winter day, kids can explore the playground, ride bikes, or feed ducks (with bird-friendly foods). Pack warm drinks and snacks to make the most of your outing.
13. Family-Friendly Hikes in Briones Regional Park (Contra Costa County)
Briones’ rolling green hills are especially beautiful in winter. Trails range from easy to moderate, making them suitable for families with kids of various ages. Wear sturdy shoes—it can be muddy—and enjoy the views of the surrounding valleys.
14. Downtown Pleasanton & Museum on Main (Pleasanton)

With its charming shops, cafes, and historic buildings, downtown Pleasanton is fun to explore on foot. Stop by the Museum on Main to learn about local history through interactive exhibits. Then, treat the family to hot chocolate at one of the cozy coffee spots.
Or go a different direction and grab ice cream at Meadowlark Dairy!

Pixieland is a charming, smaller-scale amusement park with kiddie rides, a carousel, and a mini train. It may be weather-dependent, but if you catch a break in the rain, younger kids will love the rides—just bundle up against the winter chill.
It has recently been closed intermittently, so check the website before going.
19. Take a Stroll by the Lake at Bishop Ranch (San Ramon)

You can walk over to City Center for some cocoa afterwards.

25. Explore UC Berkeley Campus (Berkeley)
Make the trek to Berkeley for a family-friendly stroll around this historic campus. See Sather Tower (the Campanile), toss a frisbee on Memorial Glade, and grab a warm drink at a campus café. Older kids might enjoy the free exhibits at the Anthropology Museum.
