This Pleasant Hill Restaurant Is Built Around Fish and Chips, and Locals Are Hooked

PLEASANT HILL, CALIFORNIA – Tugboat Fish & Chips in Pleasant Hill is earning a reputation as a local favorite for its crispy, golden fish and hearty portions. The small, unassuming spot focuses almost entirely on classic fish and chips—and it’s working. Residents say it hits the mark for quality, taste, and friendly service.

“Johnny is a cool guy. Great Fish N Chips!” said John R., one of many local fans. Johnny, the owner, is often mentioned by name in community reviews, praised not only for his food but also for his hospitality.

Several Pleasant Hill residents shared their impressions online. Richard C. said, “Their fish and chips is excellent. I grew up with H. Salt Esq. in Richmond, but it was always a tad bit greasy. Tugboat’s isn’t greasy and is always delicious. Johnny is always friendly and the staff is nice. Great place.”

Christine O., originally from the UK, gave it a nod of approval with one caveat: “They do a decent job—a good place for a fish n chips fix for we Brits. Wish they offered cod though.”

Customers say the menu goes beyond just fish. “They are delicious, love their mushrooms,” said Breonna B., while Megan W. added, “I like their prawns and coleslaw.”

But not all feedback is glowing. Lance S. noted trouble with business hours, saying, “I must have stopped by here 5–6 times and it has always been closed, even though the hours said it would be open.” Allen S. felt the prices were too high.

Still, many consider it their go-to. “I go there once a month—I love the pub-style fish and chips,” said Victoria B. Others, like Michelle R. and Gregory J., kept it simple: “Love this place.”

Whether you’re a longtime local or just passing through Pleasant Hill, Tugboat Fish & Chips seems to offer a comfort-food experience that keeps many customers coming back.

It’s located at 150 Longbrook Way, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523.

  1. Yea, call ahead, great F&C but call – they will sometimes be closed for days with no explanation. Definitely a small business.
