Walnut Creek’s Classic Mr Green Bubble Will Soon Be Replaced

Downtown Walnut Creek is losing one beloved boba spot but gaining another. A sign on the door of Mr. Green Bubble on Locust Street says the shop is closing for good.

But don’t worry–a brand new boba tea place is fast taking over! More details below, so read on.

Mr. Green Bubble has been a downtown Walnut Creek staple since 2016, when it opened at 1539 Locust St and helped kick off the city’s now packed bubble tea scene.

For years, the shop has been known for its long menu of milk teas, smoothies, slushes, and snacks like popcorn chicken. It became a go-to stop for teens after school, families on weekends, and people walking over from Broadway Plaza or the Lesher Center.

The closure does not mean the brand is disappearing entirely. Mr. Green Bubble continues to operate locations in Oakland, Union City, Menlo Park, and San Mateo, and the company notes that it first launched in Oakland in 2010 before expanding around the Bay Area.

Sign on the door confirms Ume Tea is moving in

The same closure notice includes a key line for boba fans: “Umetea will continue serving everyone at this location.” In other words, once Mr Greenbubble shuts its doors, Ume Tea is scheduled to move into the space and reopen it as a new bubble tea shop.

Now, readers report that UmeTea signage is officially up!

What is Ume Tea?

Ume Tea, sometimes styled UMe Tea, is a fast-growing boba chain that started in California in 2019. The company describes itself as being “born in California” and focused on creating special moments that celebrate the connection between “you and me,” with drinks crafted to be shared experiences.

The brand has expanded quickly since then. Various local and company sources say Ume Tea has grown to more than a dozen locations nationwide, with a heavy concentration in the Bay Area and greater California.

For Walnut Creek residents, Ume Tea will not be entirely new. The chain already operates several East Bay locations, including shops in Pleasanton, San Ramon, Livermore, and at the San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore and Stoneridge.

Ume Tea’s menu varies slightly by location, but common standouts include:

  • Brown Sugar Boba Oolong Milk Tea and other brown sugar milk tea variations
  • Mango Pomelo Sago and other fruit-forward drinks
  • Strawberry Matcha lattes and slushes
  • Lychee and watermelon green teas, plus layered matcha and fruit drinks

When will Ume Tea open in Walnut Creek?

So far, there is no official opening date for the Walnut Creek Ume Tea. The closure notice at Mr Greenbubble simply says that Ume Tea will “continue serving everyone at this location” and that the new shop will be coming “soon,” without giving a specific timeline.
