A World-Renowned Pizza Place is Coming Soon To Walnut Creek

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – From iconic spots like Slice House to low-key, old school options like Rocco’s, Walnut Creek has a ton of pizza places.

But when it comes to pizza, there’s always room for one more slice–or one more shop!

One of the Bay Area’s top pizza places–and indeed one that’s won national awards for its authenticity–has just announced that it will open a new branch soon in downtown Walnut Creek.

Doppio Zero, the Bay Area pizza-and-pasta group known for Neapolitan-style pies, says it is expanding to Walnut Creek. We even have a potential opening date–read on!

The Walnut Creek location is set for 1522 N. Main St., a longtime restaurant address that most recently housed SanDai Nusantara (and before that, PRIMA Ristorante).

As we covered before, the rent for this spot is remarkable–over $20,000 per month. SanDai and its adjacent cafe concept Kopi Bar drew serious food-world attention before ultimately shutting down amid the realities of downtown foot traffic and rent.

So Doppio Zero clearly plans to sell a lot of pizza!

While the Walnut Creek menu has not been posted yet, Doppio Zero’s other Bay Area locations (including Mountain View, Concord, San Francisco, San Carlos, and Campbell) lean into Southern Italian comfort classics: pizzas, pastas, and rotating specials.

Recent “daily specials” posted for the Concord location (over in the Veranda) included items like ribeye ravioli, a chanterelle mushroom pizza with truffle oil, and a Dungeness crab fettuccine.

Doppio Zero’s reputation precedes it. The chain has won numerous awards, including a spot in the Top 50 Artisan Pizza Chains in the World for five years running.

Yes, the whole world!

If you’re wondering about the odd name, it means Double Zero. Why name a restaurant “Zero”, especially when you need to make a lot more than “Zero” to afford the rent?

It’s a reference to the special, Italian “Double Zero” flour that pizza makers prize. It’s exceptionally fine in texture, resulting in a perfect, chewy crust.

So when does the new spot open? On it website, Doppio Zero says the Walnut Creek location will open in Spring of 2026.

  1. Great news. We’ve been going to the veranda for their food and now , maybe, even though wc can be a parking problem, the parking at the veranda is murder. Its probably the best pizza dough we’ve eaten in the 60 yrs we’ve been out here. from brooklyn. Hopefully, there’ll be some outside seating somewhere, Kind’ve surprised Amicis hasn’t come into wc, maybe Peter has cold feet. Haha
    Good luck!!
