The 925 has no shortage of places to grab a latte, but the region’s most memorable coffee stops tend to be the independent shops doing something a little different.
That can mean hand-pulled espresso, in-house roasting, Turkish coffee, a fully plant-based menu, rare micro-roasted beans, or a coffee bar where a single cup can take you around the world.
Here are seven spots worth adding to your local coffee rotation.
1. Bondadoso Coffee & Tea Collective — Walnut Creek

Bondadoso rewards coffee curiosity. Along with its standard espresso menu, the Walnut Creek shop offers a single-cup brew bar where visitors can explore coffees from a range of growing regions.
The shop also stands out for its cold-brew selection, including nitro coffee and nitro tea, plus a retail collection of small-batch coffee roasters and tea producers that are tougher to find at a typical neighborhood cafe.
It also has a really cool interior covered in motivational signs.
Where: 2195 N. Broadway, Walnut Creek
Try: A single-cup brew or nitro cold brew.
2. Lever Coffee — Alamo

Lever Coffee brings a more hands-on approach to espresso. The Alamo cafe is named for its manual lever espresso presses, which require baristas to pull shots with a level of care and control that is rare at a typical coffee counter.
The shop pairs those made-to-order drinks with artisan-sourced beans, pour-over coffee, in-house baked pastries, and handmade ceramic mugs.
For anyone who appreciates the ritual behind a good espresso, this is one of the area’s most distinctive coffee stops.
Where: 37 Alamo Square Drive, Alamo
Try: An espresso drink made on the manual lever press, plus a house-baked pastry.
3. Rooted Coffee Co. — Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek

Rooted Coffee Co. has developed a loyal following around a combination that is still surprisingly uncommon: organic coffee, a fully plant-based menu, and a community-first neighborhood cafe atmosphere.
The family-owned business began at local farmers markets before opening permanent cafes in Pleasant Hill’s Poet’s Corner and downtown Walnut Creek. Its coffee is organic, Fair Trade Certified, and roasted locally in Vallejo, while many of its signature drinks use organic spices rather than sugary syrups.
The Walnut Creek location also doubles as a small community arts space, giving local artists a place to show their work.
Where: 1941 Oak Park Blvd., Pleasant Hill, and 1321 Locust St., Walnut Creek
Try: A signature spiced coffee drink with a waffle, avocado toast, or plant-based pastry.
4. Medleno Coffee — Danville

Medleno Coffee is a small Danville roastery with an unusually broad selection of freshly roasted beans, including coffees from Colombia, Ethiopia, Java, Honduras, and Sumatra.
Its standout offering is Turkish coffee, made in the traditional style with finely ground coffee brewed in an ibrik. The result is a dark, rich, unfiltered cup that feels very different from an ordinary drip coffee or espresso drink.
Where: 480 San Ramon Valley Blvd., Danville
Try: Traditional Turkish coffee.
5. States Coffee & Bread — Martinez
States Coffee & Bread gives Martinez something every serious coffee town should have: a cafe where the roasting happens on site.
The industrial-style Ward Street space serves house-roasted coffee alongside baked goods, espresso drinks, and retail bags of beans. The roasting setup means the shop is shaping the coffee experience from green bean to finished cup.
The cafe is also a solid place to settle in for a while, with ample seating and a patio.
Where: 609 Ward St., Martinez
Try: A house-roasted drip coffee or latte with one of the bakery items.
6. Story Coffee — Livermore
Story Coffee has long been a go-to for Livermore coffee drinkers looking for carefully made drinks and a more personal local-cafe experience than the chains offer.
The business has recently been expanding its downtown presence, with a new location at Stockmen’s Park on South Livermore Avenue. That puts it in the middle of one of the area’s best walking districts.
Where: 25 S. Livermore Ave., Livermore
Try: Check the seasonal menu or ask about the current specialty latte.
7. Tellus Coffee — Walnut Creek and Danville

Tellus has become one of the more polished independent coffee brands in the 925, with airy, plant-filled cafes in downtown Walnut Creek and Danville’s Livery shopping center.
The company roasts its beans in-house on a zero-emissions roaster and builds its menu around espresso drinks, brewed coffee, tea, juice, and breakfast items. The Danville shop is especially notable for its bright design, outdoor seating, and living plant wall.
For people who want an elevated coffee stop without leaving the East Bay, Tellus is an easy choice.
Where: 1410 N. Main St., Walnut Creek, and 406 Sycamore Valley Road, Danville
Try: A house-roasted espresso drink or cold brew, then stay for breakfast.
