Walnut Creek is getting a fresh round of free summer music, and this one comes with a classic downtown setting.
The Lesher Center for the Arts is bringing back its Summer Sounds concert series on Rudney Plaza, with three free outdoor concerts scheduled for July. The shows are set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. on select Thursday evenings at the Lesher Center, located at 1601 Civic Drive in Walnut Creek.
The series starts Thursday, July 9, with Tom Rigney and Flambeau, described by the Lesher Center as a “powerhouse roots band” built around grooves, sharp solos, and an upbeat live show. The band features Tom Rigney along with guitarist Danny Caron, Caroline Dahl, Steve Parks, and Brent Rapone.
A Free Downtown Evening Out
One of the appeals here is the simple premise: the concerts are free, no tickets are required, and the series is designed to be family-friendly. Seating is first-come, first-served, so anyone hoping for a prime spot on the plaza may want to arrive early.
The Lesher Center says the concerts run about 90 minutes with no intermission. They take place outside on Rudney Plaza, at the corner of Locust Street and Civic Drive.
For hot evenings, the venue says it will have added cooling options, including misters, extra umbrellas, and access to the air-conditioned lobby.
The Summer Sounds 2026 Lineup
After the July 9 opener, the series continues Thursday, July 16, with Mustangs of the West. The group is billed as an all-female Americana-infused country rock band known for vocal harmonies, electric guitar, and violin.
The final listed Summer Sounds show is Thursday, July 30, with Alpha Rhythm Kings, a Bay Area swing ensemble with what the Lesher Center calls a “King Size California sound.” That concert is also scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Lesher Center.
Part of a Bigger Summer Music Season
Walnut Creek Arts + Rec is also promoting the Lesher Center shows as part of a broader summer concert slate in the city. Other upcoming free concerts include Broadway Plaza’s August summer concert series and a Labor Day concert by the Walnut Creek Concert Band in September.
But for anyone looking for a low-key weeknight outing, the Lesher Center series is one of the easiest options.
