SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – Fans arriving at Chase Center in San Francisco Thursday evening for a highly anticipated concert featuring Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire instead learned that the show had been abruptly postponed because of a medical emergency involving a member of Earth, Wind & Fire.
A message displayed on a massive screen outside Chase Center on August 6 said Earth, Wind & Fire was “unable to perform as scheduled tonight due to a medical emergency involving a member of their band.”
“As a result, tonight’s show with Lionel Richie will be rescheduled, with a new date to be announced soon,” the message continued.
The announcement came as concertgoers were already gathering outside the San Francisco arena for the 7:30 p.m. show. Doors had originally been scheduled to open at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets Will Be Honored for the New Date
According to the message at Chase Center, fans should hold onto their tickets.
Tickets purchased for Thursday’s show will be honored for the rescheduled performance. Refunds will also be available at the original point of purchase, according to the venue announcement.
A new concert date had not yet been announced as of Thursday evening.
Chase Center’s event listing had promoted the August 6 performance as a stop on Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Sing a Song All Night Long Tour.” The tour brings together two of the most successful acts of their eras, with Chase Center noting that Richie has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide and Earth, Wind & Fire has sold more than 100 million.
Tour Has Already Faced a Health Scare
Thursday’s postponement comes just weeks after a separate medical issue affected the same tour.
During the tour’s June 24 opening show in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie became dizzy while performing and ultimately ended his portion of the concert early. He was reportedly evaluated by paramedics and taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Richie’s following shows in Chicago and Columbus were postponed after doctors advised him to rest. He returned to the stage in Pittsburgh on June 30 and subsequently continued touring.
The circumstances Thursday are different: Chase Center specifically attributed the San Francisco postponement to a medical emergency involving a member of Earth, Wind & Fire, rather than Richie.
Neither the venue announcement nor information available Thursday evening identified the band member involved or provided details about the nature of the emergency.
Earth, Wind & Fire, founded by Maurice White, has remained one of the most enduring groups in American R&B and funk music. The band has won nine Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and received Kennedy Center Honors in 2019.
The group and Richie previously toured together in 2023 and 2024 before reuniting for their current 2026 tour.
For Bay Area fans who had traveled to Chase Center Thursday, the most important instruction for now is simple: keep the tickets. A replacement San Francisco date is expected to be announced.
