A Secret Freezer Full of the Bay Area’s Best Local Ice Cream Is Hiding in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, CALIFORNIA – Lafayette has a handful of ice cream options. But even many locals probably aren’t aware of a little secret–a freezer full of some of the Bay Area’s best local ice cream, inside a totally different shop.

Fenton’s has long been known for its delicious, locally-made, extremely creamy and delicious ice cream.

It’s such a Bay Area staple that Fenton’s featured in a Pixar movie. It’s been here for over a century.

Most people think of Fentons’ iconic Oakland location when they think of the ice cream. But you don’t need to drive through the tunnel or brave Oakland parking to get your hands on some.

Again, it’s hiding right here in Lamorinda!

The secret freezer in question is inside The Yogurt Shack, located right by Whole Foods in downtown Lafayette.

There’s a tell-tale Fenton’s sign on the door. But it’s subtle, small and seems like it’s been there a while, so it’s easy to miss.

Yogurt Shack is better known for its large selection of self-serve FroYo, as well as an extensive topping bar. Its a popular after school stop for local middle schoolers and for families with little kids.

Look behind the counter, though, and you’ll find that secret freezer of Fenton’s. And it’s not just a few flavors, either. Although it’s not as extensive as the massive menu at the Oakland flagship, there’s a dozen rotating flavors of hard-serve on offer at any given time.

You’ve got classics like chocolate and vanilla, but also seasonal flavors that rotate in and out. As I write this in October, there’s a pumpkin flavor for the season.

A “Petit” scoop will run you $6, with a larger one priced at $8. You can also get the ice cream by the pint.

One cool thing is that you can order a bowl and top it with anything from Yogurt Shack’s topping bar. If you want to cover your chocolate scoop with gummy worms, the Bay Area Telegraph won’t judge.

Fenton’s has lasted such a long time for a reason–it’s fantastic ice cream. The only ice cream we like better is Handel’s in Walnut Creek, but that’s not a Bay Area original.

If you’re in the mood for something lighter, by all means, grab a classic froyo at the Yogurt Shack. But if you’re craving traditional ice cream, you can get some of the Bay’s best right near home…now that you’re in on the secret!

You’ll find Yogurt Shack at 3518 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, Lafayette. Its listed phone number is 925-283-1127.
