Biking in San Ramon is About to Get Much Safer

Biking around San Ramon, California, is about to get a lot safer. The city is working on a new pedestrian and bicycle overpass over Bollinger Canyon Road.
The overpass will connect the Iron Horse Trail from one side of the busy road to the other. It follows several major bicycle and car-related accidents that have happened on the road over the last few years.

The Bay Area Telegraph visited and observed that construction is now underway. A large and gentle concrete slope is being built, connecting the trail to the bridge, and some of the supporting pillars are already in place.
Once it’s done, you’ll be able to whisk over this bridge without even stopping and cross one of the area’s busiest roads. Until then, there is a detour for cyclists and pedestrians that takes you by City Hall and crosses Bollinger the traditional route.
The pedestrian overpass is slated for completion in 2025. Join our newsletter so we can keep you updated on the progress:
More About the Overpass
Here’s how the overpass will look when it’s complete:

This project focuses on constructing overcrossings at Bollinger Canyon Road and Crow Canyon Road to eliminate conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, thereby promoting safer and more efficient travel in the area.
Project Overview and Objectives
The primary goals of the Iron Horse Trail Overcrossings Project are to:
- Improve safety by removing at-grade crossings that pose risks to pedestrians and cyclists.
- Enhance vehicular traffic flow on Bollinger Canyon Road and Crow Canyon Road.
- Encourage increased usage of the Iron Horse Trail by making it safer for nearby schools and community members.
Project Phases and Timeline
The project comprises four phases:
- Feasibility Study: Completed in 2009.
- Community Outreach and Preliminary Design: Completed in 2015.
- Environmental Review: CEQA completed in 2018, with an addendum in 2019, and NEPA completed in 2020.
- Final Design and Construction: The final design phase is complete, and construction is currently underway, with expected completion by the end of 2024, which has now been updated to 2025.
Benefits for Drivers and Trail Users
For drivers, the project promises reduced traffic signal delays and improved traffic circulation on the key roads of Bollinger Canyon and Crow Canyon. Trail users will benefit from safer and more convenient access across these busy streets without the delays caused by at-grade crossings.
Community Involvement and Design Selection
Community input has been integral to the project’s development. During the community outreach phase, residents were invited to choose from 21 different bridge renderings. The preliminary designs were selected based on this feedback, and the final decision on the bridge architecture was made by the San Ramon City Council, considering community input, cost, and design expertise.
Project Funding
The total cost of the project is approximately $29.1 million, funded through a combination of sources:
- $10.5 million in grants
- $13.2 million in Measure J advance funds
- $2.9 million in long-term debt
- $2.5 million from other city funds
