A Major Imposter Scam is Putting Residents at Risk, EBMUD Warns. How to Stay Safe.

ORINDA, CALIFORNIA – The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is warning residents of a scam involving individuals impersonating water agency employees. Reports have surfaced about imposters attempting to enter homes under the pretext of testing tap water. These individuals are not associated with EBMUD.

EBMUD is urging customers to remain cautious and take steps to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the utility. Here’s how you can stay safe:

  • EBMUD employees do not ask to enter your home. While EBMUD workers may notify you about nearby pipeline repairs, they will not request entry into your residence.
  • Visits are pre-scheduled. Legitimate inspections, water conservation audits, or water tests are always arranged in advance. If someone arrives unexpectedly, do not open the door.
  • Verify identification. EBMUD employees carry official identification with a name, photo, and employee number. Some workers wear uniforms, and all maintenance vehicles are marked with the EBMUD logo.

If you are uncertain about someone claiming to be from EBMUD, you can call 1-866-403-2683 to verify their identity.

EBMUD assures customers that the district’s drinking water meets or exceeds state and federal safety standards. More information about water quality can be found at ebmud.com/waterquality.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert and report suspicious activities to protect their households and community.
