PGE Wants to Give You a $7,500 Backup Battery for Free–Check if You Qualify

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is providing a $7,500 rebate to first-time customers who install a qualifying permanent battery storage system.
This program aims to help residents prepare for power outages by ensuring they have backup electricity to keep essential appliances running, prevent food spoilage, and maintain power for critical equipment. The rebate is available on a first-come, first-served basis while funding lasts.

Heads up–there are a lot of conditions and requirements!
- To qualify for the rebate, customers must be residential electric service customers of PG&E and installing a permanent battery storage system for the first time.
- They must also have experienced five or more Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) outages since January 1, 2023.
- The battery system must come from PG&E’s Qualified Product List, and customers must receive Permission to Operate (PTO) from PG&E’s Electric Generation Interconnection (EGI) Department.
- Additionally, participants must be enrolled in a Time-of-Use rate plan and a PG&E Demand Response Program.
Customers interested in applying should first purchase and install an approved battery using a licensed contractor. Once the system is installed, the contractor will submit an interconnection application to PG&E.

After receiving Permission to Operate, customers must complete the rebate application within 12 months of purchase or by December 31, 2025, whichever comes first. The application requires a purchasing agreement or contract, which must include details such as the installation date, the contractor’s license number, and the make and model of the battery.

In addition to the PG&E rebate, eligible customers may also qualify for an extra $1,500 to $2,600 through the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP), potentially increasing their total rebate amount to $10,100.
Some customers may also be able to take advantage of the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for additional savings. However, customers who have already participated in the SGIP Equity Resiliency Budget or SGIP Residential Solar and Storage Equity Budget are not eligible for this rebate.

PG&E customers can check their eligibility by entering their address in the Permanent Battery Storage Rebate Address Lookup Tool under “Assistance Programs.” For more details, residents can visit PG&E’s website or consult a licensed battery storage installer.
