Danville is about to lose one of its longtime grocery stores.
Lucky California, located at 660 San Ramon Valley Blvd. in the Sycamore Square Shopping Center just south of downtown Danville, will permanently close on Friday, July 17.
The store is expected to remain open through 5 p.m. that day, although shoppers have already begun noticing partially emptied shelves and reduced inventory throughout the market as the closure approaches.
Save Mart Companies, which operates Lucky California, said the decision was tied to the store’s economic performance.
The Danville location has been a familiar grocery stop for local residents for decades. The building has operated under several supermarket names over the years, including Albertsons, before returning to the Lucky name and eventually becoming a Lucky California location in 2019.
When the store was remodeled and rebranded seven years ago, Lucky California promoted a more California-focused shopping experience, with expanded grab-and-go food options, organic and “better-for-you” products, locally sourced items, fresh prepared foods, and community partnerships.
Now, the store is on its last legs.
Lucky California’s parent company said it plans to work with affected employees on possible transfers to nearby stores, depending on availability and seniority. The closest Lucky location is at 21001 San Ramon Valley Blvd. in San Ramon.
The closure comes just months after Danville and Blackhawk lost another longtime grocery option, when Draeger’s Market closed its Blackhawk Plaza store in February.
Danville shoppers will still have several supermarket choices nearby, including Safeway, Lunardi’s Markets, Trader Joe’s, and Smart & Final Extra. Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market also operate in neighboring San Ramon.
Still, the Lucky closure leaves a sizable hole in Sycamore Square and removes a grocery store that has served the south-downtown Danville area for generations.
No future tenant for the grocery space was identified in the closure announcement. We’ll follow this one closely, though. Make sure to join our free 925 News newsletter so we can share updates.
