Stereo 41, Massive Restaurant With a Dedicated DJ Booth, Coming Soon to Walnut Creek

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – The building at 1535 Bonanza Street in downtown Walnut Creek – formerly a PG&E customer service office – is being transformed into Stereo 41, a new full-service restaurant and bar with a music-centric twist.

The project is currently under construction, aiming to revitalize a long-vacant corner with vibrant dining, outdoor patios, and even an in-house DJ booth.

Here’s what we know so far.

Owners and Team Behind Stereo 41

Stereo 41 is spearheaded by a team of local restaurateurs with a proven track record in trendy food ventures. The concept is led by Victor Abu-Ghaben and his sister Sofia Hanan, a brother-sister duo known for their involvement in World Famous Hot Boys (a popular Nashville-hot chicken spot) and LITA Walnut Creek (a hip Latin-inspired restaurant).

They have partnered with Berk Visual (a creative entrepreneur and co-founder of Hot Boys) to bring Stereo 41 to life. This collaborative team brings significant experience in creating buzzworthy eateries – Hot Boys has gained a cult following for its spicy fried chicken, and LITA has become a downtown hotspot for modern cocktails and cuisine. With Stereo 41, the team is combining their expertise to deliver a new concept in Walnut Creek’s dining scene.

On the development side, the property owner is listed as The Edison House LLC of San Ramon, and the project’s design and permitting are being handled by architect Ignacio Gonzalez of GT/AD Studio, LLC.

Gonzalez submitted the plans and applications to the city, including design review and an administrative use permit for alcohol service.

In summary, Stereo 41 is backed by local talent and investors familiar with the Walnut Creek market, which bodes well for its successful launch.

Concept and Cuisine

According to planning documents and local media, Stereo 41 will feature “Contemporary American” cuisine served in a lively atmosphere that blurs the line between restaurant and nightlife. The establishment is envisioned as a full-service restaurant and bar with a significant entertainment component – notably an in-house DJ booth for music.

Plans unveiled at a Walnut Creek Design Review Commission meeting in March 2024 highlighted that the venue will have two outdoor dining patios and a modern design influenced by the creative style of its owners. This suggests a dining experience that goes beyond just food: guests might enjoy dinner and craft cocktails with curated music sets in the background, creating a lounge-like vibe after hours.

The dining style is expected to be casual-upscale, aligning with the owners’ other ventures that attract a trendy crowd. While specific thematic details are still under wraps, the project’s description of “Stereo” and the inclusion of a DJ booth hint at a concept that celebrates music and social dining.

It may draw inspiration from big-city restaurant lounges, offering a place where people can eat, drink, and socialize amid stylish décor and upbeat tunes. In short, Stereo 41 is positioning itself as a dining and entertainment destination – a place for good food and a good time.

Menu and What to Expect

Details about Stereo 41’s menu remain closely guarded, with the owners deliberately keeping the “food and beverage lineup” secret during development. As of now, no official menu or specific dishes have been published.

However, the cuisine being labeled Contemporary American gives some clues. This typically means a menu that could blend modern takes on American classics with influences from global flavors, presented in a creative way. Given the pedigree of the team, one can speculate that bold, flavorful dishes will feature prominently – perhaps elevated comfort foods or inventive small plates suited for sharing over drinks.

The beverage program is also likely to be a highlight. Stereo 41 will have a full bar, and if it follows the trend of its sister restaurant LITA, we can expect craft cocktails and a curated selection of beer and wine.

The owners’ existing restaurants are known for specialties (Hot Boys for its spicy fried chicken sandwiches, LITA for its upscale Latin cuisine and cocktails), so Stereo 41 might incorporate some of those innovative culinary sensibilities into a more broadly American menu.

For example, they might offer gourmet versions of casual favorites or fusion items that pair well with music and a nightlife ambiance. Until an official menu is released, the exact offerings remain speculative, but local insiders are anticipating an inventive and high-quality food selection to match the venue’s energetic concept.

Location, Design, and Features

Stereo 41 is located at 1535 Bonanza Street, at the corner of Bonanza St. and Commercial Lane in downtown Walnut Creek. The site is a freestanding one-story building that previously housed a PG&E customer service center.

Because it was an old office space, significant remodeling is underway to convert it into a restaurant. According to city planning documents, the project involves a 412-square-foot building addition at the back for a brand new kitchen, plus extensive renovations to the existing structure. The exterior will be refreshed with new paint, signage, and landscaping, giving the once-plain office a fresh identity as a dining venue.

One of the standout design features is the inclusion of two outdoor patio areas totaling about 1,129 square feet of dining space. One patio will face Bonanza Street (taking advantage of the sidewalk frontage), and another will be along Commercial Lane.

These patios will be partly covered and bordered with planters, creating an inviting outdoor lounge atmosphere while also providing a buffer from the street. The patios are expected to have comfortable seating where guests can dine al fresco and enjoy Walnut Creek’s pleasant weather, day or night.

Inside, the layout will accommodate a dining room, a full bar, and the DJ booth area. While interior design details have not been publicly released, the concept implies a stylish, modern interior that likely integrates musical elements (perhaps vintage record-themed decor or modern club lighting).

Stereo 41’s name itself hints at an audio theme – “Stereo” – so the branding and interior may play up music motifs. The capacity of the restaurant hasn’t been stated outright, but given the building’s roughly 3,200 sq ft interior plus the patios, it should host a significant number of guests, making it one of the larger downtown venues.

City Approvals and Permits

Bringing Stereo 41 to life has required several approvals from the City of Walnut Creek. Design Review Commission (DRC) approval was obtained on March 20, 2024 for the project’s architecture and site design.

At that public hearing, commissioners reviewed the remodel plans – including the building extension, patios, new façade colors, and signage – and found that the project met downtown design guidelines and pedestrian-friendly goals.

The DRC staff report noted that activating this corner with outdoor dining will enhance the street’s walkability and nightlife character. The design was seen as compatible with other nearby restaurants and bars, many of which also feature outdoor seating, helping to create a cohesive downtown atmosphere.

One notable administrative hurdle was parking. The site historically had two small tandem parking spaces off Commercial Lane, but these are being removed to accommodate the new kitchen and patios. Because downtown Walnut Creek has strict parking requirements, the owners requested permission to pay a parking in-lieu fee instead of providing on-site parking.

The City Council approved this request on December 19, 2023 via Resolution No. 23-69. This means Stereo 41 will pay a fee (approximately $18,400) to the city’s parking fund, rather than having to maintain the two parking spots, which was deemed an acceptable trade-off to allow the restaurant expansion. Effectively, guests will rely on street parking and nearby public garages, as is common for downtown establishments.

Opening Timeline

When will Stereo 41 open? As of the latest updates, the opening is anticipated for late spring or early summer 2025. A feature in Diablo Dish (December 2024) listed Stereo 41 among the “Most Anticipated Restaurants of 2025,” with an estimated opening in May or June 2025.

Having stopped by and visited the site, the Bay Area Telegraph would be quite surprised if this restaurent opened by June!

A more likely date would be mid to late Summer 2025.
