Massive Walnut Creek Sporting Goods Store Closing Forever

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – A major sporting goods store that has long occupied a strangely large location in downtown Walnut Creek, California is going out of business.

The Big 5 Sporting Goods store on Mount Diablo Blvd is currently adorned with tons of signs announcing that the store is closing. They seem to be selling everything at the location—down to the furnishings and shelves.

Big 5 Walnut Creek always seemed like a bit of an anomaly. As Walnut Creek has gotten more and more expensive and upscale, down-to-earth stores near it have been slowly swapped out for things like high-end patio furniture places and flagship restaurants.

Big 5 stubbornly held out—one of the few 1980s to 1990s throwbacks in the downtown area. Given the size of the store, the rent must’ve been a fortune.

Now, the store appears to be closing down. We’re not sure when the final date will be, but if you’re looking for some bargains on camping gear, beach stuff—or maybe some industrial shelving for those who like that kind of thing—stop by Big 5 before its final days.
