Big Taco Move in Walnut Creek As Familiar Restaurant Relocates, Expands

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – Big movement is happening in WC’s taco space. A familiar Walnut Creek taqueria is getting ready for a new downtown address.

The new space is in a more central location. And it appears to mark an upgrade in terms of the offerings at this local spot.

Taqueria Extra & Cantina is preparing to move from its current location at 1653 Mt. Diablo Blvd. to 1359 Locust St., the former Fuego Tequila Grill space in downtown Walnut Creek.

What’s Moving In

The new business is expected to operate as Taqueria Extra & Cantina, bringing the existing Taqueria Extra concept into a larger, more central Locust Street restaurant space.

Taqueria Extra’s website describes the restaurant as serving Mexican dishes including tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, chilaquiles, burritos, birria and more. The company currently lists locations in Fremont, Martinez, Walnut Creek and Pleasanton, along with food truck operations.

The current Walnut Creek location is listed at 1653 Mt. Diablo Blvd., while the new Locust Street address has been publicly tied to the upcoming cantina move.

The Former Fuego Space

The Locust Street space has been home to Fuego Tequila Grill, which lists its address as 1359 Locust Street.

Earlier this year, News24/680 reported that Fuego had been served a liquor license suspension in March and noted that the business had opened at that location in 2015.

What To Expect

A full opening date has not yet been announced publicly, but the move appears to be in progress.

Based on Taqueria Extra’s existing menu and online presence, diners can likely expect a broad taqueria menu with tacos, burritos, birria, quesadillas, enchiladas, breakfast items and vegetarian options.

The “cantina” name also suggests the new space may lean more full-service than the current fast-casual storefront, though final details may not be clear until opening.
