WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – Original Joe’s slipped into town over the weekend with an invite-only soft opening, a low-key “practice run” that quietly filled booths and bars from Friday through Sunday (Aug. 8–10).

This was strictly an invite only event (in case you’re wondering, we weren’t invited!). Word traveled fast anyway. Early guests walked out buzzing about big portions, classic styling, and service that already feels dialed.
At least 20 guests posted online about their experiences during the soft opening, giving a window into what the new Original Joes in Walnut Creek will be like.
“I was lucky enough to be invited to their pre-opening practice run… and they absolutely nailed it,” said Greg A., who called the newcomer a “game changer” that “hits every mark: food, service, and ambiance.”
For some, it was the room that landed first. One diner compared the corner neon to an Edward Hopper painting, noting how the glowing sign wraps the building like Broadway Plaza’s own marquee. Inside, guests pointed out a cozy cocktail bar, a spacious main dining room, and even a private room with its own bar—details that made the place feel both brand-new and somehow already lived-in.
“This is a quality of restaurant that Walnut Creek needed,” said Bret A., who brought his family to the soft opening. “Every meal was delicious,” he added, saying the portions were large enough for leftovers the next day. Beverly S. called the debut “another amazing Original Joe’s… a reason to celebrate.”
If you’re wondering whether it’s a special-occasion spot or a weekly go-to, the early answer seems to be “both.” “Date night, family dinner, even a group of workmates—don’t miss Walnut Creek’s newest showstopper,” said Latonya W., praising the “great ambiance, phenomenal service,” and “a taste of tradition with a twist.”
The menu reads like comfort-food royalty, and early plates didn’t disappoint. One longtime fan raved about the Steak Al Bruno—“absolutely delicious”—while others shouted out classics like lasagna and chicken parmesan. Cocktails got high marks too: “so good and fairly poured,” said Dennis C., who described the whole experience—host greeting, management check-ins, unhurried pacing—as “above our expectations.”
What stood out most wasn’t a single dish or design detail but a feeling. Multiple guests said the hospitality made them feel like regulars on night one. “Great food, service and vibe,” said John R. (who, like others, is already planning a return visit). “We’ll definitely be frequent visitors,” added Julie P., summing up the general mood.
Original Joe’s hasn’t thrown open the doors to the general public just yet, but if the secret soft-opening was any indication, Walnut Creek’s newest heavyweight is stepping into the ring ready to go the distance. As Greg A. put it: “We’re thrilled you’re here—and I can’t wait to come back again and again.”
