One of our writers, Richard Eber, shared this opinion piece about California’s Proposition 50. We asked readers to share their thoughts.
Here’s what people have to say in response so far:
I’m registered NPP (No Party Preference). Even though it’s no one business how I voted, these days a person has to qualify their opinion by stating how they voted. So I’ll start by saying that I didn’t for either Trump or Harris, but I did vote. And, yes, I agree with Richard, and will be voting NO on Prop 50. This stunt by Newsom is merely a juvenile attempt to try and somehow show that he is “fighting for the people of California”, all the while dumping his Republican and other non-Democrat constituents on the wayside and leaving them with no representation. Newsom does not care for the people of California; he’s too busy campaigning for President. – Debi S
Yes on 50. It is only a temporary change to the boundary changes. Whatever it takes to stop Trump is necessary. Congress doesn’t have many options. We need to use what we have. – Carol V
I’m proud of California’s choice to use an independent commission for districting. Wish other states would adopt the same or similar model that improves fairness and reduces political games. But that’s not the case, and so we’re left with the choices of:
1- Letting others use their own biased system and blatantly violate longstanding redistricting practices to keep power, or
2- Counter their efforts by “playing hardball” and keeping them from taking advantage of our fairness.
With a spineless, sycophantic Congress ignoring constant lies (our cities are in flames!!), failing to protect our health and welfare, enabling real weaponization of justice, and watching while American advantages in education, research, economic strength and global respect are squandered, we need to take tough steps. It’s temporary, it’s essential and we need to vote for Prop 50 to show we’re not going to let Trump assume we’re the patsies he sadly takes his supporters to be. -Pete P
You asked for opinions on proposition 50. This is a quarter million dollar waste of California taxpayer money. This will change nothing in California. Today, California has 43 Democrats and 9 Republicans in the House of Representatives, the Democratic majority will be that much bigger if this bill passes. This bill has nothing to do with helping our state, or doing anything productive for our state.
Many people view this bill as a way to stop Trump’s agenda. In 2 years his term will end, and there’ll be somebody new, so this bill in California will not be effective to achieve anything. It will cause our state to be more skewed in its one sided policies, and it will become a Democratic oligarchy government because no other voices will be heard. California will have achieved the same goal as Putin, to squash and eliminate all other opinions and voices in this state. – Sheryl H, Walnut Creek
