Walnut Creek’s Best Camera Store Has Sadly Closed

For a lot of East Bay photographers, this one is going to sting.

Camera West, the longtime high-end camera shop in downtown Walnut Creek, has closed its store at Plaza Escuela, ending a run that the company itself said lasted 17 years in the city.

Beyond the Creek reported this week that the store had “closed recently” at Plaza Escuela. Camera West has also said it relocated from Walnut Creek to a new flagship in San Francisco’s Union Square area.

As a pro photographer, this one is personal to me. I got my Leica R film camera at Camera West, as well as the “workhorse” Nikon mirrorless camera I use for some of my photographic work here at Bay Area Telegraph.

Camera West had knowledgeable staff and a fantastic selection of used film camera gear. They were also an authorized Leica location, which is great for Leica photogs like me.

The closure does not appear to be a full shutdown of the company. Instead, Camera West has been consolidating around newer locations.

On its 25th anniversary page, the company said it was opening a new multi-floor flagship on Maiden Lane in San Francisco in January 2026 and that “adapting to our ever-changing marketplace” had prompted it to relocate from its “beloved Walnut Creek address.” In that same note, the company said Walnut Creek had served as an important base for growth and East Bay community-building over those 17 years.

Camera West’s own history page makes clear how important Walnut Creek was to the business.

For serious hobbyists, working photographers, and Leica fans, Camera West was one of those increasingly rare places where you could actually handle unusual gear, talk to staff, browse vintage inventory, and be around people who cared about cameras.

It’s good to know that Camera West will continue on in the city, just a short BART ride away. Still, the local store will be missed.
