Oakland Demonstration Planned Oct. 18 as Part of National “No Kings” Day of Action

A demonstration and march are planned in downtown Oakland on Saturday, Oct. 18, as part of a nationwide “No Kings” day of action organized by Indivisible. According to organizers, participants will gather at Wilma Chan Park (810 Jackson St.) at noon, march at 12:30 pm to the Lake Merritt Amphitheater, and hold a rally at 1:15 pm.

Indivisible East Bay is listed as the local organizer. A number of labor, civil-rights, and advocacy groups are named as partners or sponsors. Organizers say the event is nonviolent and that volunteer peacekeepers and accessibility accommodations are planned.

The demonstration coincides with similar events scheduled in communities across the country as part of Indivisible’s “No Kings” campaign. An earlier “No Kings” event in the Bay Area on June 14 drew a large crowd, according to local TV coverage.

Event materials list Mayor Barbara Lee among planned speakers.

Transportation

Organizers recommend public transit due to expected congestion. Both Wilma Chan Park and the Lake Merritt Amphitheater are within walking distance of Lake Merritt BART. Nearby paid parking garages are available for those driving.
