A man died after a fight involving several adults in the parking lot of a Concord elementary school Wednesday evening, according to Concord police. Officers were called at about 5:20 p.m. to Sun Terrace Elementary School at 2448 Floyd Lane, where they found an adult male unresponsive on the ground.
Police said officers and community members rendered aid before paramedics took the man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The case is now being handled by the Concord Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, which said it is investigating all of the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident, including what may have contributed to the man’s death.
Police said the people involved in the altercation have been identified, interviewed, and are cooperating with investigators. Authorities also said they are not seeking any outstanding suspects and there is no known threat to the public.
Mt. Diablo Unified School District told families the incident happened during Sun Terrace Elementary’s after-school program. In a message sent to the school community Thursday morning, Principal Sheila McCumber said the district would have additional staff on campus, counseling and support services available, and increased police presence during Friday arrival. The incident drew widespread attention because it happened at an elementary school while children were still in after-school care, though officials stressed there was no ongoing danger to students, staff, or the broader community.
