The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office has honored three Good Samaritans whose quick action saved an AC Transit bus driver during a violent attack near the Richmond BART Station in August.
At a ceremony on Friday, Nov. 7, Sheriff David Livingston recognized Joseph Hoberg, Ivan Munguia, and Mark Quintero with commendations for citizen heroism, praising their “extraordinary bravery and decisive action” when they intervened to stop the assault and protect the driver’s life.

According to prior reports on the August incident, the driver was attacked around 7:35 am aboard a bus just outside Richmond BART.
Authorities later described the case as a domestic violence incident and identified the suspect as 54-year-old Mandingo Hayes of Richmond. He was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted murder; the driver was treated at a hospital.

At Friday’s event, Sheriff Livingston said the three citizens acted “without hesitation, and with disregard for personal safety,” preventing further harm and helping save the victim’s life. The Sheriff’s Office also used the moment to highlight the importance of stepping up safely when others are in danger and to thank community members who choose to help.

Incidents involving transit operators have drawn attention across the Bay Area this year, and Friday’s awards underscore how bystander intervention — when it is safe to do so — can make a critical difference. Investigators say the AC Transit case remains a reminder of both the dangers operators can face on the job and the power of community members to help protect their neighbors.
“Such selfless conduct exemplifies the highest traditions of citizenship, courage, and service to others,” said Sheriff David Livingston. “Their willingness to act in defense of another reflects great credit upon themselves and serves as an inspiring example to all members of our community.”
“Gentlemen, you have our deepest gratitude and respect,” the Sheriff’s office added.
