Martinez Mother Accused of Murdering Her Daughter In Apartment Stabbing

MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA – A 36-year-old Martinez woman has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her 19-year-old daughter after a reported fight at an apartment complex on Fig Tree Lane Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The daughter, identified as Shaniyah Monae Kazee, was found unconscious in the parking lot and later died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, according to the Martinez Police Department.

What police say happened

Martinez police say they were called around 1:41 pm Tuesday, Nov. 18, to a report of two adult women in a physical altercation at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Fig Tree Lane.

While officers were on their way, additional callers reported that someone had been stabbed. Officers arrived within minutes and found Shaniyah lying in the parking lot, unconscious and suffering from at least one stab wound, according to police and regional news reports.

Officers began life-saving measures until Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews arrived and took over. Shaniyah was transported to John Muir Health in Walnut Creek, where she was later pronounced dead.

Victim and suspect identified

On Wednesday, police identified the victim as 19-year-old Martinez resident Shaniyah Monae Kazee.

The suspect was identified as her mother, 36-year-old Brittney Evanna Kazee, also of Martinez. Police say she was found in the area shortly after the stabbing, detained at the scene, and later arrested following an initial investigation.

Brittney Kazee was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of murder. Jail records indicate her bail has been set at 1 million dollars.
