Video: Wallaroo Plays Chicken With the Oakland Zoo’s Train

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA – One of the coolest activities at the Oakland Zoo is the ride-on train that cruises through the zoo’s Australia exhibit.

You board the train just outside the zoo’s entrance, and it takes you through a special double-gated fence and into an enclosure filled with emus, wallabies and wallaroos (basically, smaller kangaroos).

Typically, they hop around right next to the train, offering delightful sights for visitors.

But sometimes, these animals get different ideas into their heads.

On a recent visit to the zoo, I rode the train and encountered a wallaroo who decided to play chicken with the train.

Basically, he planted himself in the middle of the tracks and refused to budge. The train kept inching closer and closer, trying to shoo him away.

But for almost a minute, he stood his ground.

Finally, at the last moment, he gave up and hopped away. I’m sure the train wouldn’t have hit him. But he can’t have known that!
