DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA – A 40-year-old Dublin man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds. Police arrested his parents-in-law nearby on suspicion of murder.
A Dublin Police Services sergeant was driving near the park at 6700 Dublin Boulevard around 3:08 p.m. on September 26 when he spotted a man lying in the parking lot, according to a city police update. Dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls around the same time.
Responding officers found Jonathan McKinsey, 40, in the middle of the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
With help from witnesses, officers located and detained two suspects who had remained nearby, police said. They identified the pair as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and both Dublin residents. Police said the two are married and are McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Both were booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder.
The shooting happened at one of Dublin’s central recreation areas. The 22.8-acre Dublin Sports Grounds has baseball, softball and soccer fields, picnic facilities and an all-abilities playground. Police have not said what led to the shooting or described each suspect’s alleged role.
Detectives are continuing to investigate. Police said there are no outstanding suspects and no known threat to public safety. Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Ahmad Mateen at 925-786-7989.
