WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – People usually don’t get too excited for the opening of a new fast food restaurant.
But Chick-Fil-A routinely defies what’s considered “usual.”
From strange cow-themed billboards, to the exclusive use of often-maligned peanut oil in its fryers, to a “closed on Sunday” policy, the chain is far different from the typical fried chicken place.
And likewise, people here in Walnut Creek have been especially excited for this opening. Chick-Fil-A draws a cult following that many wouldn’t expect.
Now, after months of anticipation and construction, we finally have an opening date for the new Walnut Creek restaurant. And, you can get free chicken!

A spokesperson told the Bay Area Telegraph that Chick-fil-A Oak Grove & Citrus opens Thursday, Jan. 22, starting at 6:30 a.m., at 2290 Oak Grove Rd. in the Citrus Marketplace area near Oak Grove Road and Citrus Avenue.
Chick-fil-A, Inc. says the restaurant will be open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., offering dine-in, carry-out, and catering.

To celebrate, Chick-fil-A, Inc. says guests who dress in cow print on opening day can receive one free entree. The company notes cow print can be anything from a full costume to a simple cow-spotted accessory, and the offer is limited to one per person in cow attire while supplies last.

Chick-fil-A, Inc. says the restaurant is locally owned and operated by Kaylee Thornton, who grew up in San Luis Obispo, attended the University of Oklahoma, and later went through the Chick-fil-A Leadership Development Program before returning to California to open the Walnut Creek location.
This project has drawn attention for being planned without drive-thru service. In 2024, Walnut Creek City Council approved the restaurant with conditions that ruled out drive-thru operations, citing concerns about traffic and noise.
Now–despite being drive thru free–Chick-Fil-A is nearly here. Grab your cow print (we know you have some) and check it out when it opens its doors.
